Last night we saw a double feature of No Country for Old Men, the latest from the Coen brothers, and the movie Awake with Hayden Christiansen and Jessica Alba. Beyond the "anesthetic awareness," a condition that allows Hayden's character to see and feel everything that's happening to him but leaves him paralyzed and unable to do anything about it during an operation, which was central to the plot of Awake, No Country for Old Men far outshone the other film. I have not read the book Cormac McCarthy novel that was the source material for the movie, but I have read All the Pretty Horses by the same author so I knew his style in terms of story content. Most of his books center on the Texas Mexico border area and have rugged men as the leads. This one was no exception to that rule, but I loved every character in it. The always lovely Kelly Macdonald from Trainspotting submerged her natural Scottish accent to play Texan wife to the heroic lead played by Josh Brolin who did a great job. Other highlights included performances from Woody Harrelson, Javier Bardem and a strong effort from Tommy Lee Jones. Yes, the trademark humor of the Coen brothers was there and so was the violence that we have seen in earlier films from them such as Miller's Crossing. I highly recommend seeing No Country for Old Men when it is released on DVD.
