Having almost completed three years on the title, Ed Brubaker continues to impress me with his writing on Captain America. Oh, there are times when I miss Steve Rogers, but what had been his supporting cast is just as interesting as he was when he was the central character. James Barnes and Natasha make a great team and I hope that Steve does not make a miraculous return from the grave any time soon. Another strength of the book is the solid artwork of Steve Epting and Butch Guice.
I know that I have said this many times, but I love the middle of the night. Three in the morning is probably when I think the best in the course of the day. Overall things are quiet and I can finally put my thoughts in order. There are no distractions and without the sun around, one can not mistake my pondering for daydreaming.
A somewhat depressing thought crossed my mind earlier this week. I will not be going on vacation until July. Sigh. Three months feels like a long time of nothing but work in my life. I have been trying to keep my mind focused on things other than work, but sometimes I just get caught up in the day to day existence. Suddenly all that I do is eat, sleep and work. I find that pattern to be very dehumanizing and I can not understand how people can accept that way of life as normal. Yes, I should not complain. When I step back, my life is good. I have a wife and family who love me. I have a job that allows me to pay for two mortgages and not reduce me to eating sandwiches three times a day. I am healthy and I have time to do things that I enjoy.
October is going by faster than I could have imagined, but I guess that is all part of the end of the year slide into the holidays. I don’t mind, but I must confess seeing Christmas decorations on sale already disturbed me a little. However, before we get to any holidays, I am looking forward to a much more personal holiday coming later this week where I will be spending some serious quiet time in the northern part of Wisconsin. Being able to escape from everything for just a few days is going to be wonderful.
Speaking of wonderful, my latest monthly batch of books from Mile High contained some great reading.
Will Pfeifer continues to move Selina into new territory and I love the interaction between Bruce and her.
Rucka is keeping Checkmate in my top five with his excellent handling of multiple characters. None of them get lost in the ever-growing story of betrayal and violence. Plus I had to smile when J’onn said hello to Bea.
Willingham has made me like the character of Fly who never made sense to me before the current story. Seeing Fly in a leadership role is very refreshing.
Moving ever forward with his trials, Freddy Freeman meets both Atlas and Apollo.
Finally we find the first Marvel entry in my monthly reading list and it is a good one. Ed Brubaker is crafting the best run in years on Captain America and part of me hopes that Steve Rogers is indeed dead. Having the central character in the book missing has made all of the supporting characters that much more interesting. I love the various reactions from Sharon, Sam and the Winter Soldier. There is no doubt in my mind that the book is going to stay in my top five unless Brubaker suddenly leaves the book.
